On s'en doutait plutôt bien mais c'est maintenant officiel: le logiciel de messagerie instantanée ICQ est encore cette année le logiciel le plus téléchargé de 2002 sur Download.com. Ça fait 221,5 millions de téléchargements pour ICQ contre 158,7 millions pour son plus proche rival KaZaA Media Desktop et 106,6 millions pour le #3, Morpheus. Ce sont les chiffres donnés par Download.com, mais il ne pas trop s'y fier car les 91 millions de téléchargements de WinZip en 2002 dépasseraient ses 86 millions à vie!!! Ce WinZip est justement 4e au classement de 2002, suivi de Webshots Desktop, iMesh, Yahoo! Messenger, la surprise du décompte Download Accelerator Plus, ZoneAlarm et finalement au #10, Audiogalaxy Satellite.

Le site OneStat.com nous fait un beau cadeau de Noël: ses estimations détaillées des parts de marché actuelles des différents fureteurs Web! Arrivent aux 3 premiers rangs 3 versions de Microsoft Internet Explorer soit 6.0, 5.5 et 5.0/5.01, récoltant respectivement 57,6%, 18,3% et 16,9%. Netscape Navigator 4.0x s'accroche au 4e rang, mais pas pour longtemps. En effet, il s'est fait rejoindre par Mozilla 1.x si bien qu'en arrondissant les chiffres à une seule décimale, on obtient 1,1% pour chacun d'eux! Opera 6.x déçoit alors qu'il stagne à 0,8%, se faisant même dépasser par Internet Explorer 4.0/4.01 (0,9%)! Plusieurs autres versions de Netscape (dont 6.x et 7.0) suivent Opera 6 et totalisent 1,9%, pour un grand total de 3,0% pour tous les Netscape confondus. Définitivement, les fureteurs dits "rebelles" ont échoué. En effet, différents trous de sécurité ont été trouvés dans l'explorateur de Microsoft Windows XP, MS Internet Explorer (versions affectées non spécifiées) et même l'extrêmement populaire lecteur multimédia Winamp versions 2.81 à 3.0, pour lesquels une version corrigée sort aujourd'hui, et permettraient à un pirate d'exécuter à distance des commandes malignes sur l'ordinateur de la victime grâce à du simple code inséré dans des fichiers audio! Ce code ne modifie pas le son du fichier audio et est ainsi indétectable à l'oreille de l'utilisateur. Il est donc important de mettre à jour ses versions de WinXP et/ou de Winamp. Pour les plus techniques d'entre vous, ces trous de sécurité sont dûs à des débordements de tampons ("buffer overflows"), une fois de plus.

Sortie de Netscape 7.01 pour Windows, MacOS et UNIX/Linux. L'une des deux seules nouveautés est la possibilité de bloquer les fenêtres "pop-up", une fonctionalité qu'avait déjà son parent Mozilla à la sortie de Netscape 7.0, mais qu'AOL était rétiscent à offrir dans son propre fureteur puisqu'il utilise lui-même cette forme de publicité largement détestée du public. Netscape avait d'ailleurs été critiqué à cet effet suite à la sortie de Netscape 7.0, qui n'a pas connu beaucoup de succès par la suite. L'autre nouvelle fonctionalité de Netscape 7.01 est la possibilité d'ouvrir un groupe de pages dans des onglets séparés au démarrage du fureteur, fonctionalité qu'offre déjà le fureteur Mozilla depuis plus de 2 semaines (bref, depuis Mozilla 1.2.0).
