Powhertz' favorites in music in

2007

HypnotizeIn my favorites of 2006, I was writing that I was waiting System of a Down's Hypnotize album from day to day. It's really what happened, and as expected, it was my album of 2007! Slightly inferoir to its predecessor Mezmerize, but still very satisfying! There isn't a doubt left in my mind: System of a Down is the best U.S.-based rock band of the 2000's. Lots of socially-engaged, relevant lyrics on this album, plus the music and voices that still manage to surprise even after 4 studio albums. Attack kickstarts the album in a very strong way, Dreaming makes some tryouts that I honestly find  more or less to be a success (a second track of voices, completely separated from the main track plays in the background, but it melts so much in the back that we don't even hear what he's saying!) but nonetheless honorable, Tentative, U-Fig and Vicinity of Obscenity are maintaining the energy level, the transition betwene She's Like Heroin and the excellent Lonely Day is absolutely genious, and even more genious is the way in which Soldier Side buckles the loop started by the intro of the previous album Mezmerize. It's really an art! For those who think that System of a Down is "noise"; just make the effort to listen carefully and you will understand that this band is on the way to become part of the legend.

On the songs side, 2007 has been a particular year since it's the very first time that none of Powhertz' author and administrator's traditional 5 favorite bands (Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Rammstein, Les Cowboys Fringants and System of a Down) has released a single to radios, paving the way for other artists to shine even more. Let's see who managed to take advantage of this special situation in the past 12 months. We nonetheless have a very good top 15 despite the absence of the big guns. As every year, it is the songs that I preferred during the year, not those that I consider to be the best and not even necessarly those that I prefer listening to now that the year is over.

(Pas la peine d'appeler, je ne réponds pas au) Téléphone

Ah, TTC! Amazing characters!! What else to say, except recommending you to listen to songs like Téléphone at high volume on a good sound system!! And the video definitely worths being watched, it's pretty funny!

Fake It

Nothing particularly genious, but it's so much exactly my kind of music! About the same kind of song than Remedy, but better! Shaun's voice is at its best in Fake It, and the double voice track on the "Good god"'s makes a very efficient effect. Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sep27sMmG-0 .
Seether
3
Tarantula

No doubt about it, it's really some Pumpkins as we love them! The first time I heard Tarantula on the radio, the presentation was wrong and announced The Shins rather than the Smashing Pumpkins. I listened to the song with interest and I told myself: "This is really like the Smashing Pumpkins, but just a little more garage"... And the identity of the Pumpkins was confirmed later on! Nothing original, just a very good stirring track from Billy Corgan's troups. For those who would have missed the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WNkRcGISfnE .

Amaranth

I'm already hearing voices calling me treacherous! Nightwish has never had any song in my yearly charts, then they off-handedly show the door to their singer and they find themselves at #4 of 2007 with a new singer! I find sad what the guys have done to Tarja (and to the fans at the same time) and I understand the fans who remain bitter about it, but from a strictly musical point of view and without any regard to who sings, I just never hooked up to any Nightwish song before Amaranth... but this one really hooked up! A superb song that harmoniously combines a sublime softness and an envigorating brickwall of rock. I rank it at #4, but looking much more towards #3 than #5. Preferably to be watched with the wonderful video. I wish that Nightwish will pursue into that direction.

Mad World

Starting from a soulless (the original from Tears for Fears), Gary Jules has made a little masterpiece. An intoxicating, soothing, sweet softness.

Survivalism

I did not even like it in the beginning, I was finding the guitar riff too excessively simplistic and the overall thing too artificial. Then I saw the video and I understood certain details, such the choruses' little cybal "rushs" that are actually really made with real cymbals by the drummer, and that's when I started listening to it with a different ear. Finally, it's some great NIN: a festival of different sounds that mix altogether in a rock song that it very hard to really get right the first time, and becomes more and more genious every time we listen to it. I won't even put a link to the video on YouTube, the sound quality of these videos being too mediocre. You must find a way to listen to it  (over and over) in "CD" quality.

Never too Late

A song that may be a little dark, but definitely a song of hope, positive. Maybe we'll turn it all around 'cause it's not too late, it's never too late. Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJtSFIwoSyw .

Almost Easy

Ouch! I think it hits even harder than Bat Country!! Avenged Sevenfold are really on the way to become the new kings of metal!
And they've got a nice video, too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BRs9z8UfQzY .

The Bird and the Worm

I wouldn't even have thought that The Used was able of a so great song. A very nice sound sprinkled of variants and subtilities, that are resulting in a very good final product. And I want to remind you again that these are the tracks that I liked the most during the year, because now I would take The Bird and the Worm beforet Hump de Bump at #9 without any form of hesitation. Who could have guessed that I would have ended up liking Marie-Mai after her career's first 2 radio singles (Il faut que tu t'en ailles and Tu t'en fous)! Still, she has slowly started progressing with Encore une nuit, then Rien has had her make a huge leap forward, that is now getting confirmed by the first single of her 2nd album:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pzoNy8g1wPY .

Forgotten for 2006: The Enemy, by Godsmack
Regrets for 2006: Many! Especially, not having placed The Pot from Tool and When you were Young from the Killers much higher.

Lack of inspiration for the Top Sucks this year! Tune up for next year!...

revision 2008/01/14: added All Good Things (Come to an End), that had been forgotten. That expells the acoustic version of Face Down by The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus out of the top 55. Took this opportunity to add more links to videos.
