2008

The tradition is respected, like every year Powhertz makes the most accurate chart of the most popular songs in Québec in the past year! However, the top will count on less sources this year, Radio Énergie having chosen not to make a top 50 and bet everything on its vote Le Choix du Québec. It's a very bad idea, because these two things are not equivalent at all. The first one measures the response level to a song throughout the year, the other one simply asks the listeners to vote for their favorite song of the year during a very specific period of 24 days at the end of the year. That's how a Poker Face, the #1 "hit" during the vote, gets in front of its nearest English-language rival with 3 times as much votes, while mega-hits from earlier in the year find themselves disproportionnally far, for example 4 Minutes by Madonna and Justin Timberlake that lands at a ridiculous #41. Another factor is that a vote is always very différent from a chart made by professionnals. A vote is a lot more easily biased (for example by a small group of people who vote several times a day at every day of the vote) and takes a measure in only one single way while the there are many to consider (has the song sold a lot of "singles"? Has it allowed the artist to sell a lot of albums? Does it made them sell a lot of concert tickets? Is it known from everybody? etc.). So it's a very sad decision from Radio Énergie, and obviously it will be a little bit disadvantaged here because the choices from its rival CKOI into its top 50 will be awarded a higher priority, since they much better represent the spirit of a year chart.

Also to be noted the absence of CHOI Radio X ' chart among my references. I simply didn't find their chart on their Web site this year... So here's the top of 2008 by Powhertz.
